British Museum than Wandering

I began my first full day with a tour of the British Museum. It’s unbelievable to see how many ancient antiques they have from nearly every culture on the planet. If you want to see the expanse of the British Empire just walk into this museum.

Entrance to The British Museum.
Amenhotep III, 1390’s BC. There are rooms of these sculptures, it’s incredible. Including a room full of sarcophagi, really many, many tombs.
Nereid Monument 390 BC, a literal temple found in the building.
Greek bust and Assyrian relief behind.
Lewis Chess Set 1200 AD, very famous.

After considerable time spent at the museum seeing all there displays I went to find Watkins Books, an interesting book store I had researched earlier. Having missed my stop I got out accidentally in Chinatown, London.

Wandered into China Town on my way to visit Watkins Book Store (not pictured).

Leaving Chinatown and still on my way to the book store I found my self in Trafalgar Square, a central hub of London.

Trafalgar Square. To the right is the National Gallery and to the left is Trafalgar square.

I found the book store and decided to go on another long walk south from the square. This brought me to Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace

Nearby is the famous Westminster Abby, so I walked there too. From here I could see the London Eye and decided to walk to the Thames to finish out my night.

Parliament under construction.

I’ll write tomorrow on my day at the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the National Gallery.

Transit

Bridging two continents five trains and one very long flight I find myself in London. I want to recount the journey here but it would be exhausting, suffice to say I’ve learned how to buy train tickets in a variety of ways.

Jacks (the black banner) was a life saver after my phone wouldn’t connect since I had arrived in London/Gatwick. Consequently they have really good coffee and gelato.

In the here and now I found my new home in London to be adjacent to several Portuguese restaurants and following the trend I went to Grelha D’Ouro and enjoyed the special of the day, a Chorizo beef stew with beans, carrots, cabbage, and fat back, all swallowed down with two pints of a Portuguese beer I’ve never had. It was really good and in huge portions which was great as I had not eaten since four the previous day and it was now about 5:30 in the afternoon London time.

The blue shop is the restaurant I visited, right around the block from my stay.

Check out some of my pictures. (there is a scant selection, to be honest I was so incredibly worn out from nearly 24 hours of travel that I couldn’t focus.)

Traveling

“There are no safe paths in this part of the world. Remember you are over the Edge of the Wild now, and in for all sorts of fun wherever you go.”

— J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit or There and Back Again

I will be traveling to Europe in four days. I will be in Europe for shy of five weeks and I intend to document my daily travels in this blog. I will include pictures in this daily blog as well in hopes that they may convey more than my words, for often I am at a loss for words.
